Subject: Opinion whether NEET based admissions have affected students
Dear Respected Sir,
Not just National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), but any kind of entrance exam beyond those conducted by school board and those which require additional training beyond school teachings, may be an additional burden to a student. On this note, I request exemption for (Tamil Nadu) students from NEET exams. Few reasons could be below:
1. The curriculums across various States of our Country may not be same. NEET brings a common single question paper, based on a single curriculum that is followed by a section of students across the country. This may effectively filter students who were not trained it that specific curriculum, but still very much talented in their own curriculum. Thus, NEET may affect students who have studied in State Boards, across the country and in Tamil Nadu.
2. Competitive exams require additional training than those required by State conducted exams. Further, competitive exams with negative marks require even more rigorous training. Such trainings may be feasible for private school students with financial background and for those who can afford additional trainings through coaching centers. However, poor students may not have a financial background to afford such coaching; or rural based students may not have access to such coaching, but still very much talented in their own curriculum. Thus, NEET may affect economically weak students and rural students, across the country and in Tamil Nadu.
3. Coaching for competitive exams are costly and time consuming. Cost of a few coaching programs run into lakhs of rupees. A few coaching programs sometimes start from as early as 8th standard for a student, stretching upto his/her 12th standard (HSC – Higher Secondary Certificate) or even more, if the student plan for multiple attempts. This cost cum time investments may exert a heavy mental pressure on the student. Thus, NEET may exert psychological pressure on weak students, across the country and in Tamil Nadu.
NEET, like any competitive exam, may only determine the knowledge of the student entering the medical college and may not determine the quality of doctors coming out of the medical college. Thus, I request you Sir, to consider the above points when you prepare your report on the ‘impact of NEET exams’ that would be presented to Tamil Nadu government.
