Hindus who adhere to the caste system believe that cosmic forces have made one caste superior to another. Yet, to the best of our understanding, these hierarchies are all the product of human imagination. Brahmins and Shudras were not really created by the gods from different body parts of a primeval being. Instead, the distinction between the two castes was created by laws and norms invented by humans in northern India about 3,000 years ago.
Many scholars surmise that the Hindu caste system took shape when Indo-Aryan people invaded the Indian subcontinent about 3,000 years ago, subjugating the local population. The invaders established a stratified society, in which they - of course - occupied the leading positions (priests and warriors), leaving the natives to live as servants and slaves. The invaders, who are few in number, feared losing their privileged status and unique identity. To forestall this danger, they divided the population into castes, each of which was required to pursue a specific occupation or perform a specific role in society. Mixing of castes - social interaction, marriage, even the sharing of meals - was prohibited. And the distinctions were not just legal - they became an inherent part of religious mythology and practice.
As time went by, large castes were divided into sub-castes. Eventually the original four castes turned into 3,000 different groupings called jati (literally birth). A person's jati determines her profession, the food she can eat, her place of residence and her eligible marriage partners. Whenever a new profession developed or a new group of people appeared on the scene, they had to be recognised as a caste in order to receive a legitimate place within Hindu society. Groups that failed to win a recognition as a caste were, literally, outcasts - in this stratified society, they did not even occupy the lowest rung. They became to be known as Untouchables.
In modern India, matters of marriage and work are still heavily influenced by the caste system, despite all attempts by the democratic government of India (Note: this book was written way back in 2010) to break down such distinctions and convince Hindus that there is nothing polluting in caste mixing.

2021 தமிழகச் சட்டப்பேரவைத் தேர்தலை முன்னிட்டு கழகத்தின் சார்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ள தேர்தல் அறிக்கையில் உள்ள - வாக்குறுதி 43-ல், “விவசாயிகளுக்கு எதிரான சென்னை - சேலம் எட்டு வழிச்சாலைத் திட்டம் நிறைவேற்றப்படாது” என்பதையும்; வாக்குறுதி 367-ல், “சுற்றுச்சூழல் தாக்க மதிப்பீட்டு வரைவு அறிவிக்கை 2020 நிராகரிக்கப்படும். காட்டுப்பள்ளித் துறைமுகம் அமைக்க அனுமதிக்கப்பட மாட்டாது” என்பதையும் இணைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று அன்புடன் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Not all agricultural societies were cruel to their farm animals. The lives of some domesticated animals could be quite good. Sheep raised for wool, pet dogs and cats, war horses and race horses often enjoyed comfortable conditions. The Roman emperor Caligula allegedly planned to appoint his favourite horse, Incitatus, to the consulship. Shepherds and farmers throughout history showed affection for their animals and have taken great care of them, just as many slave holders filter function and condition for their slaves.
It was no accident that kings and prophets styled themselves as shepherds and likened the way they and the gods cared for their people to shepherd's care for his flock.

The pursuit of an easier life resulted in much hardship, and not for the last time. It happens to us today. How many young college graduates have taken demanding jobs in high-powered firms, vowing that they will work hard to earn money that will enable them to retire and pursue real interests when they are thirty-five? But by the time they reach that age, they have large mortgages, children to school, houses in the suburbs that necessitate at least two cars for family, and a sense that life is not worth living without really good wine and expensive holidays abroad. What are they supposed to do, go back to digging up roots? No, they double their efforts and keeps slaving away.
One of history's few iron laws is that luxuries stand to become necessities and to spawn new obligations. Once people get used to a certain luxury, they take it for granted. Then they begin to count on it. Finally they reach a point where they can't live without it.

Prior to Cognitive Revolution, humans of all species lived exclusively on the Afro-Asian landmass.
As Sapiens moved to Australia, within a few thousand years, out of the 24 Australian animal species weighing fifty kilograms or more, 23 became extinct. A large number of smaller species also disappeared.
The Maoris, New Zealand's first Sapiens colonisers, reached the islands about 800 years ago. Within a couple of centuries, the majority of the local megafauna was extinct, along with 60 percent of all bird species.
Within 2000 years of the Sapiens' arrival, most of the species unique to America were gone. According to current estimates, within that short interval, North America lost 34 out of its 47 genera of large mammals. South America lost 50 out of 60. Thousands of species of smaller mammals, reptiles, birds and even insects and parasites also became extinct (when the mammoths died out, all species of mammoth ticks followed them to oblivion).
At the time of the Cognitive Revolution, the planet was home to about 200 genera of large terrestrial mammals weighing over 50 kilograms. At the time of Agricultural Revolution only about 100 remained. Homo sapiens drove to extinction about half of the planets' big beasts long before humans invented the wheel, writing or iron tools.
Unlike their terrestrial counterparts, the large sea animals suffered relatively little from the Cognitive and Agricultural Revolutions. But in the current Industrial Revolution, many of them are on the brink of extinction as a result of industrial pollution and human overuse of oceanic resources.
Don't believe tree-huggers who claim that our ancestors lived in harmony with nature.
We have the dubious distinction of being the deadliest species in the annals of biology.

Our language evolved as a way of gossiping.
According to this theory Homo sapiens is primarily a social animal. Social cooperation is our key for survival and reproduction. It is not enough for individual men and women to know the whereabouts of lions and bison. It's much more important for them to know who in their band hates whom, who is sleeping with whom, who is honest, and who is a cheat.
Even today the vast majority of human communication - whether the form of emails, phone calls or newspaper columns - is gossip. So naturally to us that it seems as if our language evolved for this very purpose.
The truly unique feature of our language is not its ability to transmit information about men and lions. Rather, it's the ability to transmit information about things that do not exist at all. As far as we know, only Sapiens can talk about their kind of entities that they have never seen, touched or smelled.
Legends, myths, gods and religious appeared for the first time with the Cognitive Revolution. This ability to speak about fiction is the most unique feature of Sapiens language.
We can weave common myths such as the biblical creation story, the Dreamtime myths of Aboriginal Australians, and the nationalist myths of modern states. Such myths give Sapiens the unprecedented ability to cooperate flexibly in large numbers.
That's why Sapiens rule the world.
