//The Narendra Modi government’s decision to dissolve the the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) with immediate effect has led to widespread outrage among members of the film industry. Set up in 1983, the statutory body, constituted under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, heard appeals by aggrieved filmmakers against Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) orders.//
//Legal experts, meanwhile, noted that this could increase the delay for filmmakers awaiting clearance and may also lead to censorship. Divya Kesar, a Supreme Court advocate, said: “The purpose of any tribunal is faster disposal of justice. Removal of FCAT will lead to an invariable delay and will make it a long drawn process for filmmakers and actors. This will lead to stalling and could indirectly lead to more censorship for the film industry.”//
//The dissolution of the FCAT follows the government’s efforts to streamline tribunals across the board. In February, the Centre introduced a bill to abolish some tribunals where the public at large is not litigant in the Lok Sabha.//

Hindus who adhere to the caste system believe that cosmic forces have made one caste superior to another. Yet, to the best of our understanding, these hierarchies are all the product of human imagination. Brahmins and Shudras were not really created by the gods from different body parts of a primeval being. Instead, the distinction between the two castes was created by laws and norms invented by humans in northern India about 3,000 years ago.
Many scholars surmise that the Hindu caste system took shape when Indo-Aryan people invaded the Indian subcontinent about 3,000 years ago, subjugating the local population. The invaders established a stratified society, in which they - of course - occupied the leading positions (priests and warriors), leaving the natives to live as servants and slaves. The invaders, who are few in number, feared losing their privileged status and unique identity. To forestall this danger, they divided the population into castes, each of which was required to pursue a specific occupation or perform a specific role in society. Mixing of castes - social interaction, marriage, even the sharing of meals - was prohibited. And the distinctions were not just legal - they became an inherent part of religious mythology and practice.
As time went by, large castes were divided into sub-castes. Eventually the original four castes turned into 3,000 different groupings called jati (literally birth). A person's jati determines her profession, the food she can eat, her place of residence and her eligible marriage partners. Whenever a new profession developed or a new group of people appeared on the scene, they had to be recognised as a caste in order to receive a legitimate place within Hindu society. Groups that failed to win a recognition as a caste were, literally, outcasts - in this stratified society, they did not even occupy the lowest rung. They became to be known as Untouchables.
In modern India, matters of marriage and work are still heavily influenced by the caste system, despite all attempts by the democratic government of India (Note: this book was written way back in 2010) to break down such distinctions and convince Hindus that there is nothing polluting in caste mixing.

2021 தமிழகச் சட்டப்பேரவைத் தேர்தலை முன்னிட்டு கழகத்தின் சார்பில் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ள தேர்தல் அறிக்கையில் உள்ள - வாக்குறுதி 43-ல், “விவசாயிகளுக்கு எதிரான சென்னை - சேலம் எட்டு வழிச்சாலைத் திட்டம் நிறைவேற்றப்படாது” என்பதையும்; வாக்குறுதி 367-ல், “சுற்றுச்சூழல் தாக்க மதிப்பீட்டு வரைவு அறிவிக்கை 2020 நிராகரிக்கப்படும். காட்டுப்பள்ளித் துறைமுகம் அமைக்க அனுமதிக்கப்பட மாட்டாது” என்பதையும் இணைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று அன்புடன் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.
மேலும் வாக்குறுதி 500-இல் நேர்ந்துள்ள எழுத்துப் பிழையைப் பின்வருமாறு சரி செய்து, படித்திடவும் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்:
“ * இந்தியக் குடியுரிமைத் திருத்தச் சட்டம் 2019-ஐ திரும்பப் பெற மத்திய அரசிடம் வலியுறுத்தப்படும். * இலங்கையில் இருந்து வந்து, இந்தியாவில் உள்ள முகாம்களில் தங்கி இருக்கும் நாடற்ற இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களுக்கு, இந்தியக் குடியுரிமை வழங்கிட மத்திய அரசிடம் தொடர்ந்து வலியுறுத்தப்படும்."

இந்தியக் குடியுரிமைத் திருத்தச் சட்டம் 2019-ஐப் பொறுத்தவரை, அதை தொடக்கத்தில் இருந்தே எதிர்த்ததோடு மட்டுமின்றி - நானே வீதிகளில் இறங்கி ஒரு கோடி கையெழுத்துகளைப் பெற்று - அச்சட்டத்தைத் திரும்பப் பெற வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கை மனுவை இந்தியக் குடியரசுத் தலைவர் அவர்களிடம் திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகம் கொடுத்திருக்கிறது. அத்துடன் நில்லாமல், தொடர்ந்து அந்தத் திருத்தச் சட்டத்தைத் திரும்பப் பெற வேண்டும் என்று திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகம் வலியுறுத்தி வருகிறது. எனவே, குடியுரிமைத் திருத்தச் சட்டத்திற்கு எதிராகச் சட்டமன்றத்தில் தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டு - அச்சட்டம் ரத்து செய்யப்படுவதற்குக் கழகம் அழுத்தமான குரல் கொடுக்கும் என்று மீண்டும் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Sheep raised for wool, pet dogs and cats, war horses and race horses often enjoyed comfortable conditions. The Roman emperor Caligula allegedly planned to appoint his favourite horse, Incitatus, to the consulship. Shepherds and farmers throughout history showed affection for their animals and have taken great care of them, just as many slave holders filter function and condition for their slaves.
It was no accident that kings and prophets styled themselves as shepherds and likened the way they and the gods cared for their people to shepherd's care for his flock.

People were unable to fathom the full consequences of their decisions.
The pursuit of an easier life resulted in much hardship, and not for the last time. It happens to us today. How many young college graduates have taken demanding jobs in high-powered firms, vowing that they will work hard to earn money that will enable them to retire and pursue real interests when they are thirty-five? But by the time they reach that age, they have large mortgages, children to school, houses in the suburbs that necessitate at least two cars for family, and a sense that life is not worth living without really good wine and expensive holidays abroad. What are they supposed to do, go back to digging up roots? No, they double their efforts and keeps slaving away.
One of history's few iron laws is that luxuries stand to become necessities and to spawn new obligations. Once people get used to a certain luxury, they take it for granted. Then they begin to count on it. Finally they reach a point where they can't live without it.
